For Parents

Important Parent Information

We use a variety of assessment tools at Brownwood.  These assessments help us know what each child's strengths and weaknesses are.  Please read through the following information.  If you have questions about these assessments, please contact your child's teacher.

1.) STAR 360 - STAR 360 is a district mandated assessment to help track student development in reading and math.  This assessment helps teachers monitor student growth throughout the year, to estimate students’ understanding of state standards, and predict students’ performance on the state test. In addition, STAR can help teachers determine appropriate instructional levels and skills that students are ready to learn.

2.) DIBELS - Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills is also a district mandated test.  These
are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills.  DIBELS are measures that help teachers and schools determine how students are performing on important reading skills.  The critical skills necessary for successful beginning reading include: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The DIBELS measures assess students on four of these five critical skills.

3.) Scantron - (Previously known as Global Scholar) is a state mandated test.  Performance Series Scantron is a diagnostic test taken on the computer.  This test pinpoints student proficiency levels and instructional needs across a range of subjects.
Over time, these tests provide a longitudinal view of student growth in core curriculum areas (English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science).
